Thank you to all who attended and purchased pieces. It was amazing to see so many gathered in celebration of all of this hardwork. It's like nothing I've ever experienced.

After “Space Between” in November of 2022, I took some time off through the holidays. I then started on a new commission which took me till the end of Feb 2023 to complete. It turned out fantastic and the clients were ecstatic!

Thalassa was a set of (4) 36x36 canvas creating one long (12 feet total) scene.

After that, I started experimenting with new materials including concrete and metal leaf. I started small, and sold a number of these pieces through the Art Machine Gallery located in the Silos at Sawyer Yards in Houston, Texas as well as at the 1st Saturday Art Market located in the Heights in Houston, TX.

The texture is concrete and the green inlays are metal leaf which I then paint on top of. Such a cool technique which I am developing on and will eventually work on larger pieces.

I also did some of these pieces in black. I found a paint which is called the blackest black from a developer in the UK. It is a zero light reflective paint that gives a depth to the concrete, it looks unreal!

I also submitted two pieces to be hung in the newly finished “Art House” Sawyer Yard Apartments. This apartment building is a sort of living gallery which is a curated by Sawyer Yards. I have two pieces hung in Sky Lounge which are available for purchase.

I also submitted for a art show in Round Rock Texas as a part of the “Plastic” exhibition which is taking place now through the end of June. My piece Neptunian #2 was accepted and currently on display. For any locals (Austin area) I will be in Round Rock this Saturday (June 24th) 10am to 3pm.

Thank you again for all your support. It means the world to me that I am able to keep going on this journey of discovery and creativity! I owe it all to you!

Leslie DeHaven Fine Art Studiotag:ldehavenfineart.com,2005:Post/70944902022-11-03T08:47:49-04:002022-11-03T08:47:50-04:00Houston Press Article
A big thank you to Jesse Sendejas Jr for writing this article on me and my first solo show.

Houston Artist Leslie DeHaven Explores The Space Between in Her First Solo Art Show

That idea is a catalyst of sorts for Houston artist Leslie DeHaven. She’s mapped her trip into the art world, she drives the vehicle and there’s nothing but wide-open space ahead to consider and capture for others.

DeHaven’s work will be on display at the Mid Main Gallery Thursday, November 3, as part of Mid Main Houston’s First Thursday block party series. The First Thursday series benefits local charities but also shines a spotlight on the city’s creatives, musicians and artists like DeHaven, who took up painting two years ago during the pandemic’s lockdown. Using acrylics on canvas and working with different textures like crackle paste, her mixed media work is gaining a growing audience.

“I’m actually really excited about this show because this is my first solo showing that I’ve done of my work and I’ve been working on a more cohesive body of work to be displayed,” she said and noted she’d previously shown at Mid Main Gallery last fall.

“I’m just really excited to have my own vision displayed and kind of a more cohesive body of work. The last time I was there it was a little last minute, so I just kind of had all these pieces that didn’t necessarily go together. It was kind of just what I happened to have on hand. So, this one is a little bit more intentional.”

The show’s title is “The Space Between,” which DeHaven said is a nod to the size of the pieces she’ll show, larger works that allow for more contemplation in what they do and don't reveal.

“A lot of my work, it’s kind of based around seascapes and landscapes. I find beauty in old, decaying architecture,” she said. “It’s a lot of pieces that are either missing or things that are slightly rough or they’re whitewashed over and things are being exposed from underneath. So, the space between to me is about the work itself.”

DeHaven's work is also displayed at the Art Machine Gallery in the Silos at Sawyer Yard

It could also reflect the space from point to point, all that fills a mind’s eye while traveling from one place to the next. DeHaven isn’t a native Houstonian, she’s still a relative newcomer who grew up in the southern Puget Sound and has traveled extensively as a musician and tour manager. She said she moved to Houston from New Orleans “because of love,” taking up residence in the Bayou City to be near her boyfriend, Eric C. Hughes, a drummer who’s worked with everyone from Mike Stinson to Archie Bell, Jerry Jeff Walker to Jello Biafra. He’s the full-time drummer for the Allen Oldies Band, a Mid Main stalwart.

The move is giving DeHaven a place to grow some roots, including these new artistic ones, but she’s recalling a life abroad to create some of her work.

“I definitely haven’t lived like the standard life, I guess,” she said with a laugh. “I’ve definitely moved around and had some unique experiences. With tour managing that took me everywhere from 46 states in the U.S., usually by van, so a lot of road, a lot of open spaces, a lot of mountains. I’ve lived in all different kinds of areas. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest. I lived in northern California, coastal, for about 20 years then New Orleans and then Houston.

“Traveling through tour managing took me into just these really rural areas throughout the country. When you look at my body of work, a lot of it definitely is inspired from either seascapes or landscapes. Obviously, they’re abstract so it’s my interpretation of those things.

“Same thing with architecture,” she added. “I find old, dilapidated buildings and old architecture very fascinating. I love that kind of worn look. So, when I was living in New Orleans, seeing all of these buildings that had all this huge history but there’s mold on them, paint’s peeling back, you know, it’s a beauty of its own. So, I pull a lot of inspiration from that.

“I’ve been around France, I’ve been through Europe, I’ve been in Germany. Same kind of thing. I always kind of utilize the environment around me and develop the sense of composition. What’s interesting when you’re doing abstracts, it’s not really having a subject, but you have a subject. So, it’s drawing a person in and drawing the eyeline to a specific place to where it’s still going to be interesting.”

There are 15 artists that display there so it’s very vast, different types of work. There’s fluid artists and there’s mixed media artists and there’s jewelers and there’s sculptors. There’s all different kinds of art being represented there so it’s a pretty cool place to have your work displayed.”

As for her solo show, she said it’ll be kid-friendly since the street party is kid-friendly. DJ Count Chocula will spin some tunes on honest-to-goodness vinyl. There will be a raffle for one on DeHaven’s pieces, no purchase required, with the winner drawn at the end of the reception.

“We’re going to have some snacks and some drinks and just hope to get some people out to look at some art and hopefully buy some art and have a good time,” she said.

DeHaven’s Instagram page features a wonderful quote – “I just want to make things and then think about them.” It succinctly sums up the desire to be creative and allows DeHaven to consider how her perspective has broadened through all she’s seen on her road to Houston. Sometimes when you’re on the road the journey seems endless, but so do its possibilities

“It’s ever-evolving and continuous as it goes. If you dig through my Instagram page you’ll definitely see that I am easily influenced through different things, especially because right now I am so new into the art world, but it’s something that I have a natural knack for and ability with,” she said. “I think because I’m coming from a place where I’m not traditionally taught that everything seems endless, possibilities seem endless, everything is on the table.”

“The Space Between,” the first solo showing of artworks by Houston artist Leslie DeHaven, November 3 at Mid Main Gallery, 3550 Main. 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. as part of Mid Main Houston’s First Thursday series.
Leslie DeHaven Fine Art Studiotag:ldehavenfineart.com,2005:Post/70807452022-10-13T14:59:53-04:002022-10-13T14:59:53-04:00Announcing My First Solo Art Show!
Please join me at the Mid Main Gallery in Houston Texas to celebrate the opening of my first Solo Art Show 'The Space Between' presented by Mid Main Houston's First Thursday.
I created 'Time to Fight' when Roe vs Wade had been overturned. I think it represents what we as women are all collectively feeling in these dark times for women's rights. I received so many messages and emails of personal stories and how they could relate. Thank you to all of your who reached out and shared their story. It is deeply satisfying the create something in which people can connect to on an emotional level.

The original piece of work now lives in New Orleans, however I now have prints available and I am donating 25% of proceeds to the National Network of Abortion Funds. "The National Network of Abortion Funds builds power with members to remove financial and logistical barriers to abortion access by centering people who have abortions and organizing at the intersections of racial, economic, and reproductive justice.

If you would like to donate directly, or if you or know someone who needs help, please follow this link for more information.

Life has a way of keeping us busy. Lots to discuss though.

First of all, I am super honored to be a part of the Art Machine Gallery located in Studio #215 in the Silos at Sawyer Yard. We have recently been voted into the top 3 in the Houston Chronicles 'Best of' for 2022. There will be a Gala happening on the 14th of July where they will reveal the #1 voted gallery (fingers crossed it's us!). I'll be sure to send photos of the gala.

Next, I have been working on a couple of new series. You may have seen these listed on my social media, though I have not put them in my online store as of yet. Some of these items have been submitted for jury review for some upcoming shows (hopefully I get chosen). Once the Jury selection is done I will send out another email announcing their availability.

One piece that was recently selected is a 30x40 called 'Keep Quiet' I made this when the documents were leaked about the possibility of Roe vs Wade being overturned. This was my interpretation of my feelings and how I thought womens voices were being stifled. This was made using all florescent acrylics so you can see the difference with black light and regular light. This piece is currently on display at Sawyer Yards as a part of their Freedom of Expression exhibit. It is currently available for sale.

After Roe vs Wade was overturned I thought my head was going to explode. I couldn't understand how such a fundamental right to bodily autonomy could be taken away. So with all my frustrations I created 'Time to Fight' which is a 20x30 also made with florescent acrylics. The one the looks more green is the one using black light. This will be ready for sale in the next couple of weeks. It is very new and still drying.

Aside from social outrage, I've been working on a mixed media series call 'Missing Pieces'. Currently I have a couple of 24x48's which are currently in Jury selection, but I also have a couple of smaller 10x20's. These will be displayed at the Art Machine Gallery later this week. If you are interested in anything you see in the Art Machine I can arrange payment and delivery. Please just email me at leslie@ldehavenfineart.com and we'll discuss options. More to come on this series. They will all be added to my store in the next week as well.

Lastly I have been working on a series called Graffiti. I love the look of buildings that have been weathered and in different states of decay (maybe that weird?). Old buildings with remnants of graffiti. Little pops of color that have been painted over but then only to be rediscovered through exposure to the elements over time. These will be added to my store next week. And of course if anything interests you, please feel free to reach out with any questions or requests for additional images etc...

Last year had a lot of ups and downs and some how or another we were lucky enough to make it through! I am very excited and looking forward to what 2022 has to bring.

This brings me to my first Gallery showing in Houston for 2022. It starts on Jan 8th and is located in Sawyard Yards in Houston, TX. If you see anything you like I would be happy to make arrangements to ship a piece to you. Just let me know if you see something on social media or this website and I'll let you know how we can get your dream artwork to your home!

New Series!

I just started a new series call 'Poseidon'. You may remember hearing the name in Greek mythology. Most times Poseidon is thought of as the God of the Sea. Although one interpretation means "Husband to the Earth". This new series embodies 'Husband to the Earth' by displaying different works of both land and sea. I hope you like it. So far there are 4 pieces, but there will be more coming soon!

Fletcher Stafford and Leslie DeHaven: "Happy Distraction"
October 7 through November 21, 2021
Opening Reception: Thursday, October 7, 2021, 6 to 9 pm

Mid Main proudly presents Fletcher Stafford and Leslie DeHaven in their joint exhibition "Happy Distraction". This show highlights both artists individually as they come together and find similarities in their approach towards life reflected in their artwork. Mid Main is excited to welcome back Fletcher for the third time since his previous show in 2020 and also showcase Leslie’s work for her debut in the gallery space. Come celebrate the opening in conjunction with Mid Main’s First Thursday event on October 7, 2021 from 6 to 9 pm benefitting Second Servings Houston. Masks are strongly encouraged inside the gallery.

Fletcher Stafford, a native Houstonian, first showed in the Mid Main Gallery in 2019 with the HISD Visual Art Teacher Exhibition and then returned for a solo show Innocent Fascination in 2020. If asked, Fletcher will say he has been making art for as long as he can remember. As a child, he would get lost in his own little world when given a paper and pencil. His grandmother and parents encouraged his pursuit as an artist at a very early age and gave him a life-long joy for creating. Over the past 22 years, Fletcher has evolved as an artist and participated in many exhibitions around Houston. His free approach to creating is truly reflected in the colorful and whimsical aspects of his artwork and specifically his painting. In addition to being an artist, Fletcher is a devoted husband, a father of two boys and a beloved elementary art educator. He also enjoys expressing himself in other artistic mediums as both a poet and a musician.

Leslie DeHaven shares a similar background as Fletcher, in that she is also a “born artist”. As a child growing up in the Southern Puget Sound, she was heavily involved in photography and learned the art of dark room film development. After receiving several awards in photography contests, Leslie branched out into painting murals and working with ceramics.

As a musician, Leslie performed percussion and woodwinds with bands around the Santa Cruz, CA area, which segued into a career as an artist and tour management. Touring 46 states and 6 countries around the world broadened her scope and introduced her to local cultures and art wherever she visited. Since the pandemic, Leslie has channeled her creativity toward new mediums as an artist, including painting with acrylics on canvas. Leslie’s abstract paintings speak to people’s emotions and sensitivities through her own reawakening of creativity.

The opening reception on October 7, 2021 is free and open to the public. All other visits are by appointment only. Please contact Laurie Mills at 713.385.6693 or lauriemills@me.com to schedule a visit or for more information about the exhibition.
Leslie DeHaven Fine Art Studiotag:ldehavenfineart.com,2005:Post/66854232021-07-12T10:43:47-04:002021-07-12T10:53:00-04:00Rockport Art Show and new pieces in the store!
Hello everyone!

It's been a little while since I have updated things here. I have been getting ready for a number of art festivals and trying to produce a good sized body of work. I had my first show at the Rockport Art Festival over the 4th of July weekend. It was a great show with a number of very talented artists. I met a number of people and received a huge amount of feedback from visitors. The main comments I received were about how much they loved my colors, composition and how unique my work is. This being my first show I was very happy to hear feedback in real time face to face with people. Especially since I've started this journey through the pandemic and everything started virtually.

My next show will be a local one in Houston. White Linen Night at First Saturday Art Market on 19th Street in the heights August 7th from 6pm -10pm! This will be my first local show so I hope to see some of you there who are in the area!

This series is a Mid Century Modern vibe with bright bold colors and sharp lines. It's a step away from what I have been doing previously. I like to work with unconventional tools and made this with squeegees and painters tape!

I'm excited to announce that I'm starting a new series called 'Wandering Minds'. Below is the first edition and it is a 24x48 Gallery Stretched canvas. I just finished this one so it is still drying and I still need to varnish it. So it will be a couple of weeks before it is added to the store. Please keep checking back for new editions to this series!

I wanted to share with you my new project I have been working on. I had fallen in love with the Sunshine series I had been working on prior, so I wanted to expand on that series and involve the moon!

Here is Moonstruck. A 24x30 Gallery Multi Media piece. There is a lot of textures and blending of colors and metallics. It was a fun project!
Leslie DeHaven Fine Art Studiotag:ldehavenfineart.com,2005:Post/65278182021-01-22T13:31:30-05:002021-01-27T10:15:35-05:00Welcome!
Hello and welcome to the Leslie DeHaven Fine Art Studio website.
